These are the words written across Clay Myers’ white board, standing front and center of his small Orlando apartment. The pursuit to play professional golf is one of hard work, discipline and perseverance, but Myers isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. His hard work is finally paying off as this alumnus from The First Tee of Memphis takes on Golf Channel’s reality series, Big Break The Palm Beaches FL.
“I’m here to show the world what I’m made of,” Myers said.
“The First Tee helped mold me into who I am today,” Myers said. “They emphasize teaching more than just golf. They focus on life lessons and how golf plays a major role in that. I take that with me every day.”
During his time at The First Tee of Memphis, Myers was paired with Champions Tour player Loren Roberts at The First Tee Open at Pebble Beach and attended The First Tee Leadership Academy, a week-long summer program in which participants gain life skills and leadership training while living away from home.
Myers signed with Jackson State University in Mississippi to play collegiate golf and found immediate success, winning his first collegiate event his freshman year. Following graduation in 2012, he qualified for the 2012 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills, where he realized out of the field of 300, he was the only African American. That experience further ignited his passion to play competitively.
“My main goal playing golf is to inspire more African American golfers to get into the sport and to play it at its highest level,” he said. “This is something I’ve dreamed about since I was 14 years old.”
This season of Big Break features 12 aspiring tour pros who will battle The Bear Trap and each other at PGA National for a chance to tee it up with the pros on the PGA TOUR at the 2015 Barbasol Championship.
You can watch Big Break The Palm Beaches, FL Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Golf Channel.
As for us, we’re cheering for Clay!
