Cameryn Smith, an outstanding young leader and junior golfer from The First Tee of Brunswick County, has a passion for girls golf.
After attending The First Tee Outstanding Participant & Leadership Summit in 2013, she applied the leadership and presentation skills she learned to help build up her chapter’s Girls Golf program.
In 2013, The First Tee’s biennial Network Meeting launched the debut of The First Tee Outstanding Participant & Leadership Summit. Thirty-two teenagers from across the nation were selected to participate in this educational event created to foster opportunities for young people to develop and hone the skills needed to become leaders and mentors in their chapters, schools and communities.
Through educational workshops, the candidates developed plans for leading a meaningful service project in their communities, providing a way to apply the skills and concepts learned at the three-day summit.
Below, Cameryn Smith shares more about her girls golf program: Par-Tee Girls
My service project was improving Girls Golf in my chapter. My goal was to improve the numbers in the program. I am also working to make it not just about golf, but a mentoring program.
We do things like arts and crafts, homework help and this year will be taking different learning trips. Last session, we named our Girls Golf Program group the “Par-Tee Girls.” I was inspired to do this project because in my chapter there are very few girls who are involved. I feel like The First Tee has given me so much that my hopes are to inspire other girls through The First Tee.
My favorite part of this project has been just spending time with the girls and getting to know them. They are always very excited about doing other activities than just the golf skills. This year I hope to double my number and register even more girls. My executive director and my program director are going to help me reach even more girls for this fall session.
The picture that I included (see below) is of some of the girls wearing some shirts that we made during one of our arts and craft days.
