~ From Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., chief executive officer of The First Tee
The Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach is one of the most exciting events for The First Tee and eighty-one of our participants. Entering its 11th year, this tournament has given more than 550 young people from more than 165 chapters the opportunity to compete side-by-side with Champions Tour players at one of the world’s most renowned golf courses.
A chance to play in the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach was an ultimate goal for these 25 girls and 56 boys, representing 56 chapters across the network. It is the culmination of years of hard work, perseverance, goal-setting and a steady development of the life skills and core values they have learned through The First Tee.
Participants often refer to this tournament as a “game-changer.” To many, the experience comes at a critical time when they are contemplating post-secondary education and careers. By spending time with professionals and amateurs, these junior golfers are given insight to the many possibilities both in the golf industry and beyond.
It was great to celebrate with John Cook who earned his 10th victory on the Champions Tour by winning the pro title at the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.
I want to personally congratulate Chris Meyers from The First Tee of Tucson on his amazing win alongside Champions Tour player Lee Janzen, earning the duo the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach Pro-Junior title. Watch Chris’s double-eagle on hole #18 to capture the title!
I also want to extend my congratulations to Katie Horsford from The First Tee of Fresno with pro partner Steve Elkington, and Joshua McCarthy from The First Tee of The Tri-Valley in California with pro partner Peter Senior, on their tie for second place.
All of this would not be possible without the generosity of Nature Valley. Their commitment to our mission provides young people the opportunity to learn and appreciate the game of golf while discovering the importance of making healthy life choices both on and off the course.
I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Nature Valley, the Champions Tour professionals, Monterey Peninsula Foundation, Pebble Beach Company and the amateur competitors for making this event such a special and memorable experience for The First Tee participants.
Remember, it’s more than a game.
