When The First Tee of Monterey County started a program to implement The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits they had no idea it would turn into fun way for the junior golfers and staff to come together for a common goal–to walk the equivalent distance between their chapter in Salinas, Calif. and The First Tee home office in St. Augustine, Fla.!
On these walks around the campus, everyone was divided into four groups which included a mix of administrative staff, coaches and participants. The participants had fun with the staff members as they came up with different ways to keep the activity fun and engaging, including singing, marching, skipping, speed-walking and walking on tip-toes.
The daily goal was for the groups to walk 1,000 yards in 25 minutes. Each walk began with a brief discussion of the core value of the week, how it linked back to a healthy habit, and how and why these play an important role in the lives of the participants. Each walk ended with a bridge-to-life session where the young people were asked to explain how they might use the healthy habit at home and in school.
This cross-country trip was a total of 2,747 miles, or 4,834,720 yards. The chapter started on November 9, 2013 and in less than one month had walked 420 miles. By March 7, 2014, they had walked 4,714,491–a total of 2,679 miles!! And finally, on March 20, 2014, they completed their journey!
The First Tee home office was so impressed with this creative and inspiring activity that we created a must-see congratulations video!
Keep on walking Monterey!!
