The Coca-Cola Champions Challenge, a five-hole competition featuring six Champions Tour legends paired with six junior golfers from six different Chapters of The First Tee, took place at Pebble Beach Golf Links yesterday.
“A few weeks ago I found out I was chose to play in the Coca-Cola Champions Challenge. Iwas so excited to have the opportunity to represent my chapter from Fort Smith, Arkansas. Today I had the chance to walk and play alongside Mr. Jeff Sluman as we competed in a skins match against five other representatives from The First Tee. I would have to say it was pretty intimidating to step up on that first tee with these true champions of the game.
What an incredible honor it was to have my name announced along with these inspiring men and their accomplishments. I didn’t have great success with my first tee shot, but after the first two holes my confidence started building because of Mr. Sluman’s encouraging words.
On hole 3, he smoked his tee shot and left me with a 45-yard pitch shot out of the rough. He advised me to accelerate through the shot and trust it. So I stepped up, committed to the shot and landed it three feet from the pin, allowing my partner to knock it in in for a nice birdie.
While playing on this incredible golf course, it is extremely easy to get distracted by the magnificent views and I could never imagine at 15 years old I would be playing here.
Today was such an awesome experience and I hope to be an inspiration for other kids across the country to set their goals and follow their dreams.
A huge thank you to all the sponsors, especially Coca-Cola and Nature Valley for making this event possible!”
